What is naturism?
Naturism, or nudism as it is sometimes called, is generally defined as the practice of going nude, especially in a mixed social setting. While accurate as far as it goes, the standard definition fails to grasp the "why" of naturism — why do people choose to be naturists? Individual responses to that question vary greatly. For some, naturism is a carefully considered lifestyle; for others, it is no more complicated than a day at the nearest nude beach. What connects these two extremes is the sense of freedom naturist activities provide. It may be a matter of simple comfort—first-time skinny-dippers frequently marvel at how good it feels to be clothes-free—or there may be something more profound. For many, the social nudity that helps define naturism is personally liberating; through it, we come not only to accept ourselves but others. As we say here, "Body Acceptance is the Idea, Nude Recreation is the Way."

Who are "the naturists"?
Broadly speaking, anyone who practices nude recreation, social nudity, or both. By that standard, there are many millions of naturists worldwide, especially in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. According to a 2000 Roper Poll, one in four Americans—roughly 70 million people—have skinny-dipped or sunbathed in the nude. And while not all of them are naturists, the rapid growth the nude recreation industry has experienced in recent years suggests many are. No longer confined to small, secretive enclaves, today’s naturists have a variety of recreational and social outlets. Publicly owned sites like Miami-Dade County’s Haulover Beach, Long Island’s Fire Island, Toronto’s Hanlan’s Point, and San Diego’s Black’s Beach now welcome naturists, as do hundreds of clubs, resorts, and campgrounds across North America.

What do naturists mean when they talk about "social nudity" and "nude recreation"?
A number of things. But first, it’s important to know what they don’t mean. Misconceptions aside, naturism is not a code word for "sex" (see below). When naturists talk about "social nudity" and "nude recreation" they mean just that—nude group activities. The variety of activities varies tremendously. There are nude backpackers, canoeists, kayakers, scuba divers—even skydivers. For less adventurous types, there is everything from the traditional day trip to the nude beach or swimming hole to house parties, chartered cruises and weekend excursions to nude resorts or campgrounds. Most things that can be done clothed can be done unclothed—and usually it’s a lot more fun.

What about the law; isn’t "social nudity" illegal?
This gets a bit complicated, but the short answer is "no." As indicated above, there are public beaches where nudity is perfectly legal. So too are there private clubs and resorts that are either clothing-optional, or where nudity is actually required. Legality is seldom an issue at these places. Nonetheless, while laws that specifically prohibit nudity and equate it with "indecent exposure" are rare, that shouldn’t be taken as an invitation to get naked "anytime, anyplace." If you undress in the village square, you’re likely to get arrested for something—be it indecent exposure, disturbing the peace, or creating a public nuisance. Even if the law is on your side, public nudity is problematic in many jurisdictions. An arrest sometimes depends not on what the law says, but on what police or prosecutors think it says or want it to say. In some places, women are still harassed for breastfeeding in public, and parents are still prosecuted for taking innocent nude photos of their children. In more enlightened jurisdictions, a sharp distinction is made between lewd activity and simple nudity, such as sunbathing and skinny-dipping . Part of our mission is to highlight the difference between lewd and nude through education and community outreach.

Is naturism appropriate for families?
Absolutely! Naturism is about body acceptance and body awareness, which makes it appropriate for everyone. Therefore, families with children are welcome at naturist venues and events. Any venue or event that purports to be "naturist" but excludes children should be viewed with skepticism. Such exclusions are appropriate in some cases. A grueling nude hike or a late evening dance at a club or resort come to mind. But the exclusion of children is sometimes used as a signal that an event is sexual in nature. The Naturist Society has no interest in passing judgment on sexual activities among consenting adults; however, TNS adamantly rejects the use of the term "naturism" as a cover for sexual activity. Naturists do not deny the sexual nature of human beings, but they reject the all too prevalent view in our society that nudity and sex are synonymous, and that children should be "protected" from nudity regardless of context. To repeat: nude is not lewd.

How do I become a naturist?
Only you know if naturism is right for you. Some people enjoy being nude in the privacy or their own home or apartment, but can’t imagine being nude on a public beach or in a resort. That’s all right. Naturism is not something that should be forced, either on yourself or others. Perhaps the best way to "become a naturist" is with the help of a friend or spouse who is a naturist. Of course, that isn’t always possible. Another option is to contact a naturist organization near you. Most local and regional naturist groups welcome new members and do their best to ease them into the world of naturism. If all else fails, why not just check out your nearest nude beach, hot spring, or swimming hole? You don’t have to take your clothes off right away; do it gradually if you prefer. Or, if it simply doesn’t feel right, just leave. You can always come back and try again. But remember: if you go to a clothing-optional site and remain clothed for too long, people might start taking you for a gawker.

What if I’m ready but my spouse (partner, or friend) isn’t?
This is common. Typically, women are more wary than men of clothing-optional venues. But everyone, male and female, has "body issues." For some, the idea of being seen nude—and seeing others nude—is filled with psychological tension. A spouse, friend or partner can help reduce the tension, but only if caution and sensitivity are exercised. Remember, every naturist had a "first time." Many who were most reluctant initially are now avid naturists. And remember, too, that there is a line between encouragement and coercion. Don’t cross it if you want to introduce someone to naturism.

Our first ‘planned’ nude outing with friends happened this weekend.

Earlier in the week a cookout at our house had turned into an impromptu nude swim session in our pool. We discovered while not ’social nudists’ per se that we all spent a lot of time that way around home.

To make a long story short we agreed to visit in their home with the idea we’d be nude from the start. I spent a lot of time thinking about this and Saturday morning called up Karen to make sure she and Mike were still ‘OK’ with the idea. She reassured me that she was and looking forward to it.

I was looking forward to it, also, but was still somewhat nervous. At our home it had evolved in a ‘natural way’. Here we were planning on going to another couple’s home - we’ve known them for sometime - and in essence ‘ strip on arrival’.

Not to belabor the story with details, but one of my biggest decisions was what to wear to some place where I was going to wear nothing. It must be a gal thing because Elliott just through on a pair of shorts and a polo shirt. Finally, I decided on a simple ‘T-shirt’ type dress (it’s really a bathing suit cover-up). No bra/underwear, and slide sandals. This way I could get naked quick - but if they had changed their minds I would still be well covered.

They only live a few minutes away so the drive was a short one. Walking up to their front door, my heart was pounding. I was carrying a cake that I had baked for dessert. Elliott had a bottle of sparkling grape juice (neither family drinks).

Mike answered the door wearing only a towel. I was somewhat relieved when Karen came out of the kitchen to greet us. She was completely nude - I felt a lot more at ease because she was the one who had appeared to hesitate at the pool party. Then came my hard part - stripping in front of friends. Someone once suggested that one should get it over with quickly so the awkwardness would pass quickly. So I took a deep breath and said, “Since we won’t be needing them where can we put our clothes ?”

They showed us to a guest bedroom off the main entrance I quickly kicked off my sandals and pulled the dress over my head. Elliott took off his shirt and shorts and laid them with my stuff on a chair. I’m glad they offered the room - it was easier to walk out already naked than it would have been to get that way in front of them. By this time Mike had tossed his towel and so we were ready for our nude evening.

There were a few nervous laughs but after about five minutes we went about making sandwiches and settling down for an evening of old movies from Mike’s collection. In reading about "nude etiquette" Karen had put out big oversized towels on the couch and chairs.

To tell you how much fun we had I think I honestly forgot I was nude. When it was time to leave, I kissed Mike and Karen on the cheek and thanked them for a wonderful evening. As I was heading toward the door Elliott asked, “Forgetting something ? Or are you going home that way ?”

I had forgotten to dress. A streak of daring hit - and since it was after 1:00 a.m. I took him up on it. He put on his shorts but carried my clothes to the car. I rode home nude and stayed that way until sometime Sunday afternoon. (It really wasn’t that daring. You can’t see the street from their driveway or ours and the ride was all of five minutes.)

Now that we’ve had nude encounters in each other’s homes I don’t know if we’ll have to plan them - I think we’ll just take them for granted.

There are nudist beaches, nudist resorts and nudist hotels. It was only a matter of time before an enterprising travel agency came up with nudist charter flights. Step aboard the charter flight, take off all your clothes and stow them along with your hand luggage in the overheard compartment. Then take your seat, fasten your seatbelt and enjoy air travel in the all-together.

You do have to wear clothing in the departures and arrivals lounges and in transit to your nudist destination. But for die-hard "naturists" this is all together the dream of travelling in the all-together. "People are booking flights like crazy," says Enrico Hess, the travel agent in the eastern German city of Erfurt who came up with the gimmick only a couple of weeks ago. "Word has spread like wildfire around the world. There’s a naturist network and they have been calling me day and night," the 34-year-old travel agent says.

The first flights for next summer to the German Baltic Sea island of Usedom have already been booked out — six months in advance. "Actually, it was not my idea to start with. A customer came in and said he was a lifelong nudist and enquired as to whether there were any charter flights for nudists," Hess says. "I thought he was joking, but he was dead serious. He said naturists love to kick off their kit any time they can. If you have a plane load of nudists on their way to a nudist resort - then why not let them do their thing in the confines of an airliner cabin at 32,000 feet where they are not going to disturb anybody on the ground?"Hess’s Ossi Reisen travel agency caters to East Germans, who call themselves "Ossis."

Germany has a long tradition of nudism, and eastern Germany is the heartland of the "naturism" movement. As early as the 19th century, naturism was seen as a way to combat the urbanization of the industrial revolution and to help city dwellers to get back to nature. To this day, most big city parks in Germany have a hedged-off nudist section. The nudist meadow in Munich’s famed English Gardens attracts camera-toting tourists from all over the world every summer. And in East Germany under Communism, nudism was a way for people to shed the constraints of everyday life and to be free. East Germans were not allowed to travel to the West. But they made a point of liberating themselves of their clothes at lakeshores and seaside beaches. And now that East Germans are able to fly off to any where they wish, they seem bound and determined to unbind themselves of their clothes.

"It’s amazing," says Hess, "but there is a tremendous demand for nudist hotels, nudist restaurants, nudist bars, nudist gyms - you name it, and nudists want to take their clothes off and enjoy it in the raw."

I became a naturist early in 2000 after I came across the SCN Website and discovered to my joy that I wasn’t alone in preferring the look and feel of having no pubic hair. I have been a "smoothie" intermittently since the early 1980s, but constantly since early in 1999, and intend to remain a smoothie for as long as I can wield my electric shaver!

I had been secretly fascinated by naturism since my teenage years, one memorable time being when I was swimming alone in the sea. Although I didn’t have the courage to remove my swimming costume entirely, I pulled it down to below my waist just so that I could get as close as possible to the feeling of swimming nude. At that time, however, I was extremely self-conscious and totally lacking in confidence. I would have been terrified to remove my swimming costume altogether in case I lost it and had to walk up the beach wearing nothing but a very red face! After having children later on, which took its toll on my body, I was always self-conscious about being overweight and so badly scarred with stretch-marks, although I now realised that I need not have worried as naturists really don’t worry about scars or blemishes.

Once I had decided to look into naturism further I contacted John, the SCN Organiser, to find out a little bit more about naturism in general and SCN in particular. He assured me that genuine naturists are not critical of each other’s bodies and that naturism is not about body image, but about body acceptance. I was very apprehensive about my first encounter with public nudity, so John very kindly offered to take me to Rio’s Naturist Health Spa in Kentish Town. We met up initially in a clothed environment to introduce ourselves and talk about naturism and the SCN club, then arranged for a day when we would meet up for my naturist debut!

When the day arrived, I had lost my earlier nervousness, probably due to the fact that I had already met John and had seen photos of him on the SCN website, so it didn’t feel at all strange seeing him naked in person. Within a very short space of time I forgot that I was naked and found the whole experience to be relaxing and very enjoyable - particularly the Jacuzzi which is my favourite! I also had my first experience of swimming completely naked in the little pool - and it was well worth waiting for! I went home very much on a "high", and immediately emailed all my new naturist friends to tell them what a wonderful time I’d had. Of course, they already knew the pleasures of social nudity and were very pleased that I had enjoyed myself so much.

The next event was only a week later, at The Kingfisher Naturist Sun club in Lightwater, Surrey. As I was being introduced to the members present, I recognised most of the faces from the pictures on website and they all gave me a very warm and friendly welcome. John ensured that another lady member was present as it was my first event with the club. The conversation was varied, consisting mostly of computers and naturist venues, while some people disappeared into the sauna every now and then. I felt very comfortable in their company, but one thing made me stand out from the others: my skin was very white, whereas most of the others sported all-over tans!! We ladies then plucked up courage to try the heated outdoor pool, although it was extremely cold, but only a couple of the men felt brave enough to join us! I really enjoyed the whole event and returned home feeling as if I had spent quality time with old friends. They even laughed at some of my jokes, so they apparently had a good sense of humour too!

Since my initial experiences I have been to many other naturist venues and have begun to work on that all-over tan. I have now been to Costa Natura in Spain and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, as well as visiting Brighton, Studland, Fairlight and Eastney beaches, Rio’s and Silverleigh health spas, Spielplatz Naturist Club near St Albans, Herts, and Sunglen Naturist Club near Ashford in Kent. Some members also invite SCN to hold a Club Event in their own homes, including one member who has his own swimming pool.

My whole life has changed since I took those first steps to becoming a naturist and I have made countless new friends, both in person and by email. SCN was an ideal club for me as we visited several different venues around the country, meeting up with many of the same familiar faces, but also some new ones. It’s so sad that, mainly due to too few people turning up at events, SCN had to close.

SCN members were a mixed group of people of all ages, walks of life, shapes and sizes, and were great fun to be with. The only other thing which I found rather sad was that there apparently aren’t as many ladies brave enough to take the plunge and try the naturist lifestyle. There is nothing to compare with the feeling of lying naked on a beach in the hot sunshine with a gentle breeze cooling your skin, alongside other like-minded people. Naked swimming is also a wonderful experience and when I go swimming to my local baths for exercise I rather resent having to don a clingy swimming costume!

Let me tell you how I became involved in social nudism. Back in the early eighties I was in the navy stationed in San Diego. Five miles from the base was a famous clothing optional beach (Blacks Beach).

I finally made it to the bottom and the beach was packed with mostly nude people. There were so many people there that it was hard to find a place to spread out my towel. It was a hot day in the middle of July, and to escape the heat I decided to take a dip. That is when I took my suit off for the first time. After my swim I decided to leave my suit off. Being a young sailor I was worried that I would get an erection and embarrass myself. To my relief it never happened.

Being fairly comfortable with being nude I decided to walk around. There were people playing volley ball others playing hackie sack. Farther down the beach there were people body painting others. Some of the body art was very impressive.

Everybody that I met seemed friendly, and soon I forgot that I was nude. I had one of the best times that day joking and laughing with my fellow nudist.

When I finally looked at my watch I could not believe that I had spent the whole day there, and I knew that it was time to scale the cliff back to the car (which I was not looking forward too). I learned later that there was an easier way to get to the beach, on the south side there is a paved road that winds down to the bottom. It is perfect for people like myself that have a fear of heights. You can also walk along the shore line from Torrey Pines State Beach.

I visited the beach every chance that I could. I made a lot of friends at the beach, male and female. Then came the day when I served my time and was discharged from the navy. I headed home to Wisconsin were I figured my nudist days were over for I knew of no place in the state were you can be sociably nude.

Several years later I headed back to sunny California with my new bride. While we were at La Jolla Beach I suggested going to Blacks Beach. I was not sure how she would react, but to my surprise she thought that it was a good idea.

My wife and I had a wonderful time. The warm sun beating down on our naked bodies. Splashing and playing in the ocean.

Much too soon it was time to go home. Once again I had to say goodbye to the freedom of Blacks Beach. While my wife and I spent a lot of time nude inside our home, we didn’t know of any place outdoors where we could be nude.

Not so long ago we bought a new computer. Soon we had access to the information highway. I came across a news site on nudism and learned of the Naturist Society in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The very same day I wrote to them and soon I received a letter back. They informed me that there are two places to be socially nude in Wisconsin. One was Valley View Recreational Club in Cambridge, Wisconsin. The other is Mazo Beach in Mazomanie, Wisconsin.

It was the middle of January at that time and very cold, outdoor nudity was far from my mind. Then spring arrived and a fellow worker said that she was going camping for the weekend. Another co-worker told her that her husband and her go camping in the nude at Mazo Beach. I decided that on my next day off I would go for a motorcycle ride and check mazo out for myself.

Although it was a Saturday, I was still surprised to find that the beach was packed, and like Blacks Beach the people there were friendly. Some people next to me were grilling their lunch and asked me to join them. I accepted and made some good friends that day. I have to drive about 90 miles to get to Mazo, but it is well worth it. I try to go there every week, and now that fall is falling upon us I have to tell you that happiness is no tan lines.

It is clear that being dressed has not kept children safe. The best thing we can do is teach our children the confidence to speak up when people do things which make them uncomfortable. If they are not ashamed of their bodies, they are much more likely to tell their parents when someone does things to them that they don’t like. Whether nude or clothed, children should know that being touched in certain ways is wrong. Although good parenting is by far the most important factor in raising children, naturism helps to promote their confidence and understanding about their bodies.

Don’t children get confused as to when and where they can be nude?

Everyone has to teach children when and where it is acceptable to be nude. Naturists simply have more places where it is acceptable. Unlike non-naturists, we don’t teach our children that nudity is wrong. We teach them that some people aren’t comfortable with nudity and that sometimes we need to dress for practical reasons (e.g. weather).

Is naturism good for children and young?

Anyone who has observed children knows that they are enthusiastic naturists. We have never seen young children who are self-conscious when nude. In fact, you may observe them squeal with delight when they are allowed to run around nude. It is only in their later years that they are pressured into being self-conscious and adopt older people’s phobias about the body. We believe that it is healthier for children to grow up comfortable with their own bodies. We don’t think there is any advantage in teaching them to be ashamed and embarrassed by certain parts of their young bodies.

Ernest Thompson Seton describes skinny dipping as one of the first activities of his Woodcraft Indians, a forerunner of the scouts in 1902. Swimming was done nude at the YMCA until the 1960s in single sex groups. In some English schools, Manchester Grammar School for example, nude swimming was compulsory until the 1970s. This was also the case for some US junior high schools. A Gallup poll in 2000 showed that 25% of all American adults had been skinny dipping at least once.

A naturist club, community, centre, resort or facility is a place where nudity is openly permitted. The terms are loosely defined and there is some regional differences. In the main clothing is optional, except in certain prescribed areas, like the swimming pool or the sunbathing lawns but some more traditional facilities do insist on complete nudity–when practical. This distinction is a source of controversy among some naturists. It is sometimes not possible for all the staff at a naturist facility to remain naked due to prevailing health and safety regulations.

A landed or members’ naturist club is one that owns its own facilities. Non-landed (or travel) clubs meet at various locations, such as private residences, swimming pools, hot springs, landed clubs and resorts, and rented facilities. Landed clubs are run by their members on democratic lines or by one or more owners who make the rules. They have the right to select who becomes members and what the members obligations should be. This usually involves a share of the work necessary to maintain or develop the site.

Many clubs promote frequent social activities. Some of the clubs have stricter entrance requirements than some traditional ‘country clubs’, including the requirement to supply references, a sponsoring member, a trial membership, committee approval and/or, criminal background checks. UK clubs are now required to have child protection policies in place, and designated child protection officers.

The international naturist organisations were mainly composed of representatives of landed clubs. A nudist colony is no longer a favored term, but it is used by naturists as a term of derision for landed clubs that have rigid non inclusive membership criteria, and in meta-data on naturist websites.

A holiday centre is a facility that specialises in providing apartments, chalets and camping pitches for visiting holidaymakers. The centre is run commercially, and visitors are not members and have no say in the management. Most holiday centres expect visitors to hold an INF card, that is be a member of their national organisation, but some have relaxed this restriction, relying on the carrying of a trade card. Holiday centres can be quite small, just a couple of hectares or large occupying over 300 hectares.

In a large holiday centre there will be swimming pools, sports pitches, an entertainment program, kid’s clubs, restaurants and supermarkets. Some holiday centre’s allow regular visitors to purchase their own chalets, and generations of the same families will visit each year. Holiday centres are more relaxed about textilists than members clubs; total nudity is usual in the swimming pools and the beaches, while on the football pitches, or in the restaurants in the evening, it is rare.

A naturist resort is, to a European, an essentially urban development where naturism is the norm. Cap d’Agde in France, and Vera Playa in Spain are examples. Here there are apartment blocks, with privately-owned and rented apartments. For some residents this is their year-round home. One finds all the usual facilities of a small town. In the US usage, a naturist resort can mean a holiday centre.

A free beach or naturist beach is one where people can be entirely free of clothes. Some beaches have been naturist beyond living memory, and their status has been formalised thus becoming official beaches, others have become official through the policies of the local authority, to meet a perceived need or economic advantage. ther beaches are unofficial but naturism is known to be tolerated. In some European countries, such as Denmark and Norway, all beaches are clothing optional, while in others like Germany there are naturist sunbathing areas in public parks.

Though free beaches developed separately from national naturist bodies, these bodies are taking an interest and helping to protect them legally, and through the publication of guidelines of acceptable behaviour. In North America, the Free Beach Movement was the name of a group that was opposed to the direction of the official nudist organisation, the ASA, and set up the rival body The Naturist Society.

Freikörperkultur (FKK) literally translated as free body culture is the name for the general movement in Germany. The abbreviation is widely recognised all over Europe and often found on informal signs indicating the direction to a remote naturist beach.

Naturism, sometimes called Nudism in some parts of the world, is a lifestyle in harmony with nature, expressed through social nudity, and characterised by self-respect of people with different opinions and of the environment.

The naturist philosophy has several sources; many can be traced back to the health and fitness philosophy in Germany in the early twentieth century, though the concept of returning to nature, and creating equality are also cited. Contact with German clubs took the idea to England, Canada and the US where a network of clubs developed. French naturism was organised in a different way, and large holiday complexes developed which in their turn influenced Quebec then and the US. More recently, free beaches and other types of activity have freed naturism from clubs.

Naturism does not condone erotism and blatant sexuality but is associated with this in the public mind and that of media.

The word naturism was used for the first time in 1778 by a French-speaking Belgian, Jean Baptiste Luc Planchon (1734-1781), and was advocated as a means of improving the ‘l’hygiène de vie’ (natural style of life) and health.

The International Naturist Federation explains: "Each country has its own kind of naturism, and even each club has its own special character, for we too, human beings, have each our own character which is reflected in our surroundings."

The usage and definition of these terms varies geographically and historically. Though in the United States, naturism and nudism have very similar meanings, in Britain there is a clear distinction. Nudism is the act of being naked, while naturism is a lifestyle which at various times embraced nature, environment, respect for others, self-respect, crafts, healthy eating, vegetarianism, teetotalism, non-smoking, yoga, physical exercise and pacifism as well as nudity.

In naturist parlance, the word textilist is used to describe someone who is not a naturist, or the act of not being naturist. e.g.He stayed all week but was textilist all the time. It is also used as an adjective to describe a facility where naturism is not allowed e.g "the textilist beach starts at the flag". Clothing optional and nude optional (US specific) describe a policy or a venue that allows or encourages nudity but tolerates the wearing of clothes. The opposite is clothing compulsory; that is, disallowing nudity, thus requiring the wearing of clothes. Clothes free/clothes-free and clothing free/clothing-free are used as adjectives to describe when naturism is permitted in an otherwise textilist environment.

The social nudity movement includes a large range of variants including "naturism", "nudism", "Freikörperkultur (FKK)", the "free beach movement" as well as generalized "public lands/public nudity" advocacy. There is a large amount of shared history and common themes, issues and philosophy, but differences between these separate movements remain contentious.

Naturism is practised in many ways; Marc Alain Descamps, in his study written in French, classified the types as: individual nudism, nudism within family, nudism in the wild, social nudism. To that we can add the militant naturist, campaigning or extreme naturists.
